During the first year of the programme students will build up a wide range of skills and knowledge relevant to a versatile illustrator including, drawing, photography, printmaking and other two and three dimensional processes; the development of visual skills begins with illustration projects and workshops during level 1 which introduce fundamental activities that illustrators work with; a variety of projects explore divergent contexts of conceptual, character and narrative illustration; finally, at level 3, students are encouraged to develop a more individual style and illustrative content to suit emerging career directions; drawing from the imagination, and from observation, plays a key role in communicating ideas; cross-disciplinary activity in the third year is motivated by individual interests and has leads to greater diversity of illustration work; contact with live projects, competitions and opportunities for external shows locally and in London provide experience of professional practice.
