Modules

1st year

A study year at HAN consists of four eight-week terms. During all four terms, you will follow lectures and get hands-on laboratory experience that prepare you for the exam period at the end of each term. In addition to classroom study, you will do a short 'mini placement' that will give you a glimpse of the profession. You also undertake individual and group projects, in which you will learn how to combine technical knowledge with communication and marketing skills. Each project forms an essential part of the learning process, and you will be evaluated on content, practical skills and teamwork.

2nd year

During your 2nd, 3rd and 4th years, you will follow lectures and participate in a number of projects.

The two main topics in the 2nd year are ‘Design of an automotive engineering structure’ (semester 1) and ‘Simulation and testing of a design’ (semester 2). These cover the following core materials:

  • Control engineering
  • Electrical systems
  • Materials science & strength of materials
  • Production
  • Combustion engines
  • Connection technology

The practicals that also form an important part of the 1st year programme include:

  • Statistics
  • Diesel & LPG
  • Control engineering
  • EOBD
  • DC motors
  • Test Engineering

3rd year

In your 3rd year you will take on a 6-month work placement, preferably within a company outside the Netherlands. During your placement, you will learn firsthand about the field of automotive engineering and will gain valuable practical and social experience.

The 3rd year subjects focus on the professional tasks of the designer/tester, more specifically the automotive test engineer. A test engineer can design, carry out and report on investigations independently and in a group context, and formulate and quantify proposals for improvement based on simulations.

You will also study Automotive Electronics, which focuses on the necessary sensors, actuators and control and regulation units in vehicles and how they communicate.

4th year

During the first six months of your 4th year you will complete a minor. This enables you to deepen or broader your knowledge in your field of interest. You can choose one of the minors offered at HAN but it is also possible to choose a minor at another Dutch or foreign institute or university. Or if you already have plans to continue with a Masters degree, you could follow a bridging programme to prepare you for this next step. In the second half of your fourth year you will carry out a graduation assignment in the professional field. This is the final evaluation of the knowledge and skills you have acquired during the Automotive Engineering course. You may carry out your assignment at an international automobile company of your choice.

Location

HAN University of Applied Sciences has two campuses, located in Arnhem and Nijmegen.

Nijmegen is situated on the banks of the river Waal, in the east of The Netherlands, near to the German border, and is the oldest city in Holland - recently celebrating its 2,000th anniversary.

Arnhem, the capital of the province of Gelderland, is only 15km from Nijmegen and lies partially in the hills at the edge of National Park De Veluwe, a striking area of woods and heath. Arnhem is a ‘green’ city, where people take pleasure in living, working and recreation.
