Successful completion of 6 compulsory modules leads to the award of PgCert: Art, science and technology of war; symmetric and asymmetric conflict; security and the physical environment; the nature of security: reality and perception; introduction to international relations theory; conflict dynamics, transformation, resolution and prevention; successful completion of the next 6 modules leads to the PgDip: 2 compulsory modules on the law of armed conflict; plus 4 elective modules chosen from: terrorism: causes and techniques; terrorism: the Liberal state response; intelligence and international security; disaster management; information security; war, conflict and the media; the Northern Ireland Troubles: 1968 to the present; security in the Middle East; security in Africa; security in the Asia-Pacific Rim; having successfully completed the PgDip, students can then complete a 15,000-20,000 word thesis in any area covered by the course which may lead to the award of the Master of Science.
