The programme aims to nurture the talents of aspiring writers through workshops, lectures and tutorials, and to encourage new writing within a supportive but critical community; students are given the encouragement and time necessary to write, and also the opportunity to explore issues of craft through extensive reading and critical debate; students attend a 3-hour session every Wednesday evening during term-time; these sessions are divided between a series of writing workshops and academic modules which consider published texts; students also discuss their work with tutors in 1-to-1 tutorials, and there are 1 1/2-day conferences each year; the programme ends with the submission of a major piece of fiction worth 60 credits.
