Education Studies As well as the lectures, tutorials and seminars that might be expected, education studies is also taught through placements in classroom-based environments; across all 3 years this currently includes a substantial period of placement time in primary, secondary or special schools and the likes of heritage sites, museums and art galleries; links to subject are made in a number of ways during placement and the student is encouraged to use and apply the skills, knowledge and understanding of their specialist subject; within the current 3-year programme as a whole, all students are required to undertake a full complement of education studies modules totaling 180 units of credit; level 1 modules are compulsory, ensuring that all students have a common core of knowledge and understanding; a range of compulsory core and optional modules are offered at levels 2 and 3. Music Workshops and concerts in schools aim to develop performance using a wide variety of instruments from steel drums to viols; the application of singing, orchestral instruments and expert use of equipment which children may have available in the classroom, such as recorders, guitars, bells and ocarinas forms many group work activities; the student enjoys individual tuition on the instrument of their choice; this work, together with group activities, leads to a series of recitals at the end of the programme; the student is also involved in the University College's various performing groups such as the University College choir, the wind band and the string ensemble; some students find time to join local music groups as well; whatever the student decides to do, they will become a versatile musician with a broad understanding of music and its roles in society; having completed the programme, the student will be ready to inspire others and to organise and direct music in many different situations.
