Level 1: Students take foundation modules that prepare them for the study of film at higher levels; students also receive advice on research, writing and oral communication skills; modules include: introduction to film studies; student survival kit (academic study skills); ideology of the image; cinema and society: film as evidence and propaganda. Level 2: Gothic and horror; screening the modern immigrant: ethnicity and film in the USA; cinematic contexts; the globalisation of American popular culture; film and the American imagination; working with words. Level 3: At this point students consolidate their learning from the previous 2 levels; students can choose to write an extended study on a topic from film studies or on a topic from their other subject area; modules include: women, theology and film; the collapse of order; adaptations, literature and film; gender, sexualities and contemporary popular culture; film studies; dissertation.
