This exciting course provides a combination of theoretical and practical nursing experience; diploma students are allocated a non-means tested bursary while on the programme (course fees are paid by the NHS); after completing the common foundation programme, students follow a selected branch of nursing, chosen from adult, mental health, learning disabilities or children’s nursing; students gain experience in a variety of hospital and non-hospital settings, where students work alongside healthcare and other professionals; clinical experience amounts to 1/2 of the total course content; students are normally allocated to a home-base NHS Trust and most of the clinical placements are arranged in this geographical area; this base may not be in the same geographical area as the School of Health centre, where students complete their theoretical studies; the course enables students to develop an understanding of professional nursing issues, understand the importance of working within a multidisciplinary team, and cultivate essential nursing skills; students have an opportunity to gain a valuable insight into different branches of nursing, and to gain first-hand experience in a variety of healthcare environments.
