History looks at the variety of human experiences among groups and individuals in diverse cultures, geographies and throughout time. Historians frame questions, seek out evidence, evaluate conflicting accounts, synthesize large amounts of information, and provide explanations for what happened in the past. History increases our understanding of the present and provides a guide for the future.
UTstudents have access to a variety of resources to help them investigate the past including the Carlson Library, Canaday Center Archives, Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo-Lucas County Public Library and area historical organizations. Tucker Hall, home of the history department, is one of the oldest buildings on Main Campus.
Public history introduces students to the professional practice of history in venues outside the academe including museums, archives and historical societies. Courses utilize an applied approach through teamwork, projects and work with sponsoring agencies.
