Course provides clinical training underpinned by a strong foundation in the hearing, speech and balance sciences; also develops students’ faculties for independent learning, critical thinking, reflective practice, problem solving, and related professional and employment skills; course uses a variety of teaching methods, such as discovery and problem-based learning, and draws on the facilities of the Institute for Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), including its in-house audiology and cochlear implant centres; the multidisciplinary staff includes audiologists, teachers of the deaf, speech and language therapists and surgeons, many of whom contribute to teaching; students also have open access to the institute’s Audiology Skills Laboratory, which is used to provide training in clinical procedures; clinical experience is provided throughout the course; local audiology services host short clinical placements throughout Years 1, 2 and 4, whilst Year 3 is spent on clinical placement, with students undertaking 2 6-month salaried placements at different NHS hospitals in the south of England; Year 4 includes of a year-long research project, in which students design and conduct an experiment and present the results at a student conference.
