The course reflects the broad, multidisciplinary nature of the subject area, which includes Latin and Greek language, the history of Greek and Roman antiquity from archaic times to the beginning of the Middle Ages, and Greek and Roman literature, culture, art, and philosophy; modules allow students to tailor their advanced study and research-preparation to their interests, needs and existing knowledge; students take 4 modules and a thesis of between 12,000 and 15,000 words (May to September); there is 1 compulsory module in research training and normally, 1 unit in a language (ancient or modern); pathway options include: the city of Rome pathway and the Athens and Attica pathway involve a period of study abroad (British school in Rome or Athens); the song, text and performance pathway involves studying ancient Greek language and units in song, text and performance and either Hellenistic poetry or Ancient drama; the core/research training course (studying the ancient world: techniques and approaches) consists of weekly seminars over both semesters; in semester 1, students are introduced by experts to a range of specialities, from textual criticism and ancient numismatics to epigraphy and ancient writing systems; semester 2: presentation on a subject of choice.
