For focusing on the history and society of the Greek and Roman worlds using written (historical) and material (archaeological) sources, this degree provides the breadth and depth required, whilst also allowing the development of practical archaeological skills; there is also the option to take languages, either Greek or Latin and archaeological fieldwork which usually takes the form of excavation or a museum placement; in the first year, core topics provide an essential foundation in the history and archaeology of Greece and Rome and develop skills of historical and archaeological analysis, in particular criticism of sources; in years 2 and 3, students choose topics from both history and archaeology of the Greek and Roman worlds, in addition to a wide range of options including practical archaeology or either Greek or Latin language; in the final year, a dissertation develops skills of independent research, argument and written presentation and gives the chance to focus on a topic of particular interest.
