The key difference for distance learning students is the method of teaching: based upon use of the University's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) "Blackboard" this allows for a range of innovative and engaging teaching techniques to be used such as online presentations, podcasts, interactive message boards and Wikis, as well as 1-to-1 contact through conventional channels; the distinction between the proportions of assessment of core and option modules remains for distance learning students, except that there is no examination, with alternate online assessment methods being used (such as online presentations); through either method of delivery Master's students who have passed all forms of assessment are able to proceed to write a supervised dissertation of between 12000 and 15000 words in length.
