The Scandinavian languages have a rich literature ranging from the Middle Ages to the modern period; for the linguist they offer a fascinating field for comparative study between themselves and with other Germanic languages; social policy involves the theoretical, historical and comparative study of why and how societies change through social policies which affect the well-being of their members; the course examines responses to the pressures of social, economic and technological change and how public policies, social institutions and market forces affect social justice and access to the distribution of goods and services in contemporary societies; it also explores the value-conflicts expressed in current debates over policies.
