The Scandinavian languages have a rich literature ranging from the Middle Ages to the modern period; for the linguist they offer a fascinating field for comparative study between themselves and with other Germanic languages; English and Scottish literature explores not only a wide range of individual works and authors, but also the historical and theoretical frameworks within which works of literature are created and understood; the study of English literature is therefore historical, involving a knowledge of literature in all major periods from Medieval to Post-modern, and also formal, involving comparative study of different styles and genres and of the varying uses to which they are put; equally important is the evolution of the traditions of criticism and thinking about literature by which literary works have been interpreted, and are interpreted today.
