This course aims to provide students with advanced level understanding both of the different approaches to the study of history as well as of specific aspects of the modern history of Britain and Europe; for some students this programme will be the natural conclusion to their historical studies; for others it provides an effective platform for further research beyond Master's level; specifically the programme provides students with the opportunity to broaden and deepen their knowledge of British and European history since the early 19th century through a combination of compulsory and optional modules; to relate knowledge and understanding to an appreciation of different historiographical traditions and of the significance of more recent trends in historiography, and to select from a small range of more specialised modules which are structured around the current research interests and activity of relevant members of faculty.
