The past 50 years have seen a remarkable increase in the number of novels, poems and plays dealing with the subject of visual art or artists, while, at the same time, art itself has grown ever more accustomed to presentation through a filter of words and ideas; there is, however, relatively little articulated contact between writers of literature on the one hand and professional or scholarly writers about art, or indeed artists, on the other; there are signs of a desire to develop a fruitful and creative dialogue between what used to be considered as sister arts; the School's Master's Writing the Visual is unique in offering an opportunity to explore the dialogue between the practices of literature and the practices of the visual arts; it does so through both creative and critical writing with the possibility of collaboration between students and working artists as well as with scholars in either field; there is no prescribed outcome to the course; the final product may be a body of poetry, or fiction, or creative writing, or a collaboration with a painter, designer, animator, or a book as a mixed media artifact, or indeed an exhibition.
