Designed to critically examine contemporary photographic practice and theory; recognises photography as a set of practices which take place in particular contexts, and which are historic as well as modern; students develop advanced, innovative ideas and practices; students also consider 21st-century practice and debate with a perspective informed by an understanding of the conventions and dissent of 19th- and 20th-century photography; course also explores photography in writing (literature, criticism and textbook) and the status, identity and credibility of the photographic image in an increasingly digitised society; written and visual responses reveal how new technologies challenge contemporary practices and lead to the re-evaluation of past practices and their written histories.
