The course is designed to reflect the increasing impact of genomic sciences on our understanding of disease, medical diagnosis and research; in addition to a consideration of the basic science underlying genetics and genomics, the course covers the use of informatics and ethical implications of medical advances; the course aims to provide a high level of scientific knowledge and understanding of genetic influences on disease processes, develop an informed and critical appreciation of current and developing technologies and their information technology requirements for gene and genome analysis, develop an appreciation of the information technology tools used in medical informatics, develop a framework to assess ethical implications of developments in biomedical sciences; students gain additional specialist knowledge in areas such as immunology or epidemiology of emerging infectious disease and enhance individual intellectual development through the research project and dissertation.
