Part-time n/a years: 0 - 2
This pathway focuses especially on 20th and 21st century literature; its core course, modern literary movements, surveys internationally significant trends, influences, and movements in modern European and American literature, including, for example, the prophetic role of the modern poet, challenges to Realism, the impacts of philosophers such as Nietzsche, the schools of Expressionism, Surrealism, and Absurdism, the modernist disruption of literary conventions, aspects of writing on the Holocaust, and the emergence of postmodernism; these developments are studied through the analysis of major representative texts within their relevant cultural context; students pursue wider interests by studying 3 options from the large provision of the department, choosing at least 1 of these in an area that is relevant to modern literature; students further develop their interest in literary theory or literary-theoretical approaches to literature and culture through a 15,000-word dissertation to be submitted at the end of the programme; all texts are studied in English or in English translation.
