The course is studio-based and largely practical, meaning students become adept at visual and verbal communication, self motivation, research, numeracy, information technology and teamwork, whilst deepening their understanding of their specialist subject area; study block 1 focuses on strategic thinking as the first step in creating solutions to fulfil clients’ briefs; this is achieved through lectures, case studies and group discussions: all applied during studio practice; for the specialism of art direction, students learn vital layout and typography skills, as well as developing their appreciation of photography, film, illustration and fine art, and their application to advertising in media both traditional and digital; for copywriters, a range of practical and varied projects will further their writing skills; students are required to write in a clear, lively, visual and concise style so that audiences are stimulated, engaged and responsive; during London Study Week students visit a number of major advertising agencies. This intensive week builds upon existing knowledge and helps students to develop contacts within the industry; during study block 3 students work towards producing a portfolio that is fresh, inventive and assists their transition into this fiercely competitive industry.
