Press and editorial photography is a highly competitive business: the pressure is on to get the very best picture possible, whether it’s of a war zone, a football match or a celebrity portrait for the Sunday supplements; to make a mark in this demanding industry, the student needs the skills, confidence and imagination to stand head and shoulders above the crowd; the course shows the student that the ability to take a good picture is about having an eye for opportunity, as well as passion and flexibility; knowledge, technique, professional experience and a creative vision are essential skills, as is learning to edit and select images for publication, transmitting images using the College’s electronic picture desk, and understanding how and why photography reflects and influences society; from idea conception to image making and post-production, the student experiences all stages of professional press and editorial photography, using both traditional and digital technologies; through workshops and real problem-solving situations, they learn to think on their feet to get that all important shot, whilst also mastering the intricacies of page layout, image making and image manipulation.
