Students in the Chemistry program will learn about chemical principles both quantitatively and qualitatively, in addition to acquiring hands-on laboratory experience. Students will learn how to develop hypotheses and design experiments, make measurements and observations, collect, organize and analyze data, and use instrumentation. In addition to taking both lecture and laboratory courses, Chemistry majors are expected to participate in individual mentored research with a faculty member. This training in research deepens their scientific knowledge and problem-solving skills and often includes opportunities to present research findings both to other EMU students as well as at regional or national conferences. Chemistry graduates are qualified to work as a professional chemist in either industrial or government research, and may also choose to fill other technical positions in places such as the chemical industry, government laboratories, or regulatory agencies. Graduates will have the rigorous background required to pursue an advanced degree in fields including chemistry, environmental sciences, biochemistry, toxicology, chemical engineering, and materials science.
