Students work closely with students of other theatre disciplines in production teams, so that they understand, respect and work effectively with all the people that they are likely to meet in professional practice; these include the craftspeople and constructors who realise the designs, and the stage management and production technicians who bring the students' work to the moment of performance; within the course, students develop their ability to make models, to produce technical and costume drawings, and put these skills into practice; 1 of the main aims of the course is to develop practitioners who have a strong sense of their individual direction and identity; from the 1st year, students are encouraged to think conceptually; they undertake theoretical design projects that challenge and test their ideas in a wide range of contexts, from opera to site-specific installations.
