Medical anthropology is described as the study of cultural beliefs and behaviours associated with the origin, recognition and management of health and illness in different social and cultural groups; medical anthropology is not simply concerned with practices of healing or systems of diagnosis and treatment such as biomedicine; it deals with the more informal systems of healthcare that exist worldwide (self-treatment; folk healers; shamans; and alternative practitioners); as well as those associated with professional western science-based medicine and caring practices; it is also concerned with issues which relate to different cultural views of the 'self' in health and disease, as well as shared beliefs, images and practices associated with perceptions of the human body and mind.

Location

The University is just a 20-minute walk – or a short bus ride – from Uxbridge underground station, so it is a straightforward journey into central London. There is also a night bus that can bring you from central London to the edge of the campus. The town of Uxbridge itself, which still has buildings dating back to its time as a Georgian market town, is a thriving commercial and business centre. Its major shopping complexes, The Pavilions and the Chimes Centre, boast a wide range of shops, cafes and a nine-screen multiplex cinema.
