The course allows advanced study of contemporary literature in all its diversity; students examine popular genres; the 21st-century novel; contemporary innovations; postcolonial literatures; postmodern poetics; and more; designed to develop advanced theoretical understanding of cultural, social, intellectual and aesthetic contexts, it allows students to engage with some of the most exciting writing of the last 30 years; students attend classes focusing on a number of contemporary authors; an extensive programme of writers talking allows students to hear important contemporary writers discussing their own work; the wide-ranging syllabuses of taught modules confront the divisions between innovative and popular literatures; in workshops and seminars, students engage in discussion, present their own interpretations and raise new questions for debate; they develop skills and expertise in the dissertation, a major project focusing on the literature of your choice.

Location

The University is just a 20-minute walk – or a short bus ride – from Uxbridge underground station, so it is a straightforward journey into central London. There is also a night bus that can bring you from central London to the edge of the campus.
