Innovative transmission, broadcast on BBC2 on 3 January 1971, led to a forty-year partnership between the Open University and broadcaster. During this time, they jointly produced a 7,000 television and 4,000 radio programs. The first black and white broadcast attracted 25,000 students who started studying the arts, social and natural Sciences and mathematics. In the 2009/10 academic year programme BBC/Open University saw about 300 million viewers. Remotely the University has over 250,000 students, including 20,000 overseas.
