Seven London universities have been ranked in the world’s top 200 in the 2010 THE World University Rankings, more than any other city. The rankings recognise the quality of the teaching, research, income and internationalism of the world’s universities. The seven top ranked London universities are: Imperial College London, University College London, King’s College London, London School of Economics and Political Science, Royal Holloway, University of London, Queen Mary, University of London, Birkbeck, University of London. The number of top universities increased from five in the 2009 rankings to seven in the 2010 rankings, demonstrating the growing academic strength of the city. London’s nearest rival cities in the rankings are Hong Kong, Boston and New York, all of which had four universities in the top 200.
