Imperial College London invests one billion pounds into a new campus

Imperial College London will open a large new campus by 2015 near White City in London. Imperial College is one of the best universities for scientific study in the UK.

Imperial’s rector, Sir Keith O’Nions, has said that instead of a campus the new grounds will be an “ecosystem” of interdisciplinary research, postgraduate activities and commercialisation, including space to “co-locate” spin-off companies and businesses. The campus will be the first of its kind in the UK, akin to the set-up at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology - which hosts companies on site both multinational and originating from alumni.

The new centre will also comprise of Wood Lane Studios, an already finished building with accommodation for more than 600 postgraduate students and researchers, further research buildings, leisure and retail facilities, a medical clinic and a publicly accessible square. Making the campus culturally attractive and complementary to the South Kensington campus is thought of as imperative for the project managers and Imperial.

The research and innovation centre will be open by early 2015, with the two further academic buildings completed soon after.
