What level of English you can start preparing for the exams? What level of language proficiency require universities? In what time frame must meet in order to have time to obtain a certificate and apply for admission to the University?

To start preparing the students whose level is not below Intermediate. In parallel with the training necessary for a successful test of the skills students actively improve their English. Such programs are offered by many UK institutions. In Russia, as a rule, a preparatory program designed for the level not lower than Upper-Intermediate.

What level of English require universities?

Admission requirements of universities in General English for the first higher range from 5.5 to 7.5 (IELTS), which roughly corresponds to the levels Upper-Intermediate, Advanced and Proficient. Requirements for admission to graduate programs – 6.5 (IELTS).

Special certificates assume the language level from Advanced to Proficient. Does not require additional evidence of language competence to graduates of the IB (International Baccalaureate) and Foundation programme. On the websites of the universities you can find detailed information on the entrance requirements for the selected course.

When to start preparation?

The timing of the training depends on the terms of providing documents to the University and the current language level of the student. Applications for the next academic year for a first degree are served through a single system UCAS from 1 September of the current year:

  • 15 October for specialties "medicine", "dentistry", "veterinary", "basic health care", as well as to the universities of Oxford and Cambridge;
  • 15 January for all other specialties, including programs in art and design (which in previous years applications were accepted until March 24).

Late applications (received up to 30 June) are accepted by the system and can also be considered by the universities.

Applications for postgraduate studies are submitted directly to the chosen University. Typically, Universities set deadlines from October to April of the current year to the next, although some accept applications until Aug. It should be remembered that there are some programs that fill up quickly, and set them can end quite early.

Important! It is not necessary to delay the application for admission if the test has not yet passed or in the hands not of the results – original or certified copy of the certificate will provide later, more importantly, to meet the specified University timeframe. With regard to the test results, it is necessary to remember that from the moment of the exam and to obtain them may take from two weeks to two months.
